EXPLORING VOLCANO'S

Sunday, April 05, 2015

Recently I went on a Geography trip to the Tongariro Volcanic Centre.  The volcanos in this centre are among the biggest in New Zealand so it's a pretty special place. We spent 3 days there with my geography class with absolute stunning weather.

Here's a little overview of what we did....

On Sunday morning we left very early in the morning and spent approximately 5 hours travelling on a bus towards the centre of the North Island. Once there we drove up to Whakapapa village and went on a 2 hour walk on the ring plain of the volcano's. Next, we drove to our motel and got settled in for the night. After dinner, consisting of lasagne and salad we all hung out in our rooms and went to sleep...

The next morning we woke up early to a beautiful sunrise behind the volcanos and we knew it was going to be a stunning day. Breakfast consisted of eggs, bacon, toast, muesli etc. After getting sorted in our gear, we set off towards Mt Tongariro. Todays plan was to walk the first few hours of the Tongariro Crossing, one of the most famous alpine crossings in New Zealand. Of course because it was March there was no snow unfortunately, but it was still quite chilly. The walk was absolutely awesome because the weather was just beautiful. We were able to see the tops of the volcanos and enjoy the soda springs. That afternoon we went to the Tokaanu hot pools, which are thermal pools heated by the warmth under the ground. Finally after a long day we went back to our motel...

On the last day of our trip we went to the Whakapapa Visitors Centre to learn more about the history and Maori significance of the area. Next we went to the chairlifts which are used in winter to carry all the skiers up the mountain. This part was definitely my favourite since the views were amazing. Unfortunately then it was time to get back on the bus and go home again but I knew that I would sleep very well....

Hopefully you enjoyed hearing about the trip that I recently went on as part of my geography course at school. The Tongariro Volcanic Centre is definitely and amazing place to
go and walk and it is even more amazing during the winter months when the volcanos are covered in snow and perfect for skiing!
